How to Build Recessed Shelves
Opening the Wall
Step 1
Stud spacing isn't always exact, so open the wall before you build the shelf unit in case you need to adjust the cabinet width. Use a 4-foot level to draw a line for the top of the cabinet. Then cut the line with a drywall saw until you run into a stud at both ends.
Step 2Measure down 32-1/2 inches from both ends of the line and use the level to mark a plumb line along both studs. Then mark a level line across the bottom of the vertical lines. Cut along these lines with the drywall saw, and remove the cutout.
