How to Build Recessed Shelves
Transfer the shelf layout lines around to the outside and back of the unit. Put the shelf in place and predrill two countersunk holes into each side. Apply glue to the back and ends of a shelf. Secure the shelf with 1-1/2-inch drywall screws and three brads through the back. Install the other shelves.
Step 2Rip (if necessary) and crosscut the trim pieces (E, F, and G) to size. Lay out the triangular and diamond-shaped cutouts on the top trim (F) as shown in the drawing. Drill 1/4-inch-diameter starter holes and make the cutouts with a jigsaw.
Step 3Join the top and bottom trim pieces to the side trim pieces with glue and one #20 biscuit or two pocket-hole screws per joint. Set a combination square to 1/8-inch and use it to guide a pencil as you lay out a reveal around the unit's perimeter.
