Classical Style Variations

The classics -- in both architecture and music -- share many elements of style, vocabulary, and methods of expression.

For example, both can state a theme and explore its variations. In the room shown, classically designed elements combine in rhythmic repetition: fluted casings for doors and windows and as fireplace pilasters. But each one has a different width, a variation on the theme. In a similar way, crown molding tops the walls, door casing, and fireplace surround, but each site presents a different interpretation, providing a unity of design but individuality of expression.
