Deck Finishes: Sealers, Stains & Paint
Overexposure to the sun dries out the wood, opening the grain and turning tiny cracks into major splits. Sun-dried boards will curl and twist if they are not securely fastened every 16 inches or so.Projects in Finishing
If moisture is allowed to sit on wood surfaces for long periods, wet rot can be the result. Wet rot usually starts in crevices and joints where water collects and is slow to dry out. If a board is substantially rotted it should be replaced.
Moisture may also lead to black, slimy mildew. Fortunately you can quickly treat mildew by washing the affected area.
Once you've finished building a deck -- or when it's time to refinish your old deck -- protect your investment by applying sealer or stain or both. Check with a lumber supplier to find out which product works best for your wood and in your area.
