Trimming the Edges

This project shows you how to add decorative trim to the edges of a deck.

Step 1

Trim along the edges of the deck adds a decorative detail with just a little extra work. Make your own trim by ripping 3/4-inch pieces from your decking stock.

Step 2

Fasten the trim to the ends of the decking with two 8d finish nails into each decking board. Countersink each nail with a nailset. Cut scarf joints where two pieces meet.

Step 3

Whenever you get to the end of a trim piece predrill it, or insert the nail in your cordless drill and drill the nail in.

Step 4

At the corners of the deck, miter the trim at 45 degrees and fasten it with finishing nails in predrilled holes.
