A deck is usually in an exposed location where it is subject to the ravages of the elements. Many older decks are built of nontreated or poorly treated lumber, making them easy targets for rot.
Projects in Repair & MaintenanceExposure to the sun causes untreated wood to turn gray. In the case of redwood, this is an attractive silver color. If the wood is pressure-treated, the color is less attractive. Either way, the gray can be removed by washing with a deck cleaner.
