Setting a Running Bond Pattern

How to set a running bond pattern for a brick-in-sand patio.

Step 1

Prepare the site for a sand bed. When you excavate, make sure the depth of the bed will leave the brick about 1 inch above grade. Set any edge restraints and border pavers. Tie mason's line to two pavers and set them at the beginning and end of the first course.

Step 2

Using the mason's line as a guide, lay the first row. Cut pieces of 1/8-inch plywood for spacers, moving them as you go. Start the next row with a half brick to offset the joints and alternate half and full starter bricks on the remaining rows. Set the brick with a rubber mallet, level the surface, and finish with swept sand.
