This story shows you how to repair siding shingles.
Use a hammer and chisel to split a damaged siding shingle. Try to split the shingle at or near a nail in the piece above.
Use pliers or your hands to wiggle and pull the pieces out.
Use a hacksaw blade or a detail hacksaw tool to cut through hidden nails above. Flex the blade to cut the nail flush with the wall.
Reassemble the damaged shingle to make a template for cutting the replacement shingle. Or measure the area and subtract about 1/4 inch to allow for expansion. Cut with a knife or saw.
Slide the replacement up until it is 1/2 inch below its final position. Just under the course above, drive two nails at slight upward angles. Use a nail set to finish driving the nails.
Use a scrap of wood and a hammer to tap the replacement shingle up, aligned with the shingles on either side.
